Locked Out of Your Airbnb in Cancun: What to Do

Actualizado el 3 September 2026

It is a specific kind of awful. You stepped out for two minutes, the door closed behind you, and everything is on the other side of it: the key, the phone, the passport, the shoes. You are in a country you arrived in yesterday, in a building with no front desk, and the person whose apartment this is has their phone on silent in a different time zone.

This happens several times a night in Cancun, all year round. The good news is that it is a solved problem and a fairly cheap one. The bad news is that the order in which you do things makes a large difference to what it costs you — and the two mistakes that cost the most are both easy to make in the first ten minutes.

This guide is the order we would use ourselves.

First: do not force anything

The most expensive decision available to you in the first ten minutes is trying to get in yourself. A credit card on a latch, a screwdriver on a window frame, a shoulder against the door — every one of them turns a $500 peso problem into a several-thousand-peso one, and in a rental it turns your problem into a deposit dispute.

It is worth being concrete about the arithmetic. Opening a standard apartment door in Cancun costs $450 to $900 pesos, roughly $26 to $51. Replacing a door frame that has been forced starts at several thousand pesos and takes days, during which the unit cannot be re-let and the host will be looking for someone to bill. A damaged window is worse.

The second expensive decision is the balcony. Cancun rentals are frequently on upper floors with a sliding door that may or may not be locked, and every year people find out which. Do not climb anything.

Second: check whether someone already has a key

Before you call anyone, spend five minutes on the possibilities that cost nothing.

Many buildings in Cancun — particularly condo towers in the Hotel Zone and Puerto Cancún — have a concierge, a security desk or a building administrator, and some of them hold a spare for the unit. They will not open it for you without the host's say-so, but if you can reach the host by message, that combination solves it in ten minutes and costs nothing.

If the property uses a lockbox, check it again properly. Lockbox codes are the single most common false alarm: guests are frequently given the building door code and the lockbox code and try them in the wrong places, or the box is stiff and needs a firm pull rather than a gentle one.

And check the obvious: an unlocked second door, a window left open by the cleaner, a neighbour who is also renting from the same host. None of these is likely. All of them are free.

Third: message the host, but do not wait for the answer

Send the host a message immediately, then carry on solving the problem. Do not sit on a stairwell for an hour waiting for a reply that may come at eight in the morning.

The message matters for two reasons beyond the obvious. First, if the host replies confirming you are the guest, that is the cleanest possible authorisation for a locksmith to open the door. Second, it timestamps the fact that you told them, which matters if there is any later discussion about who pays.

Say exactly what happened, in plain terms: what time, which door, and that you are outside. Ask them directly whether there is a spare with the building or a neighbour, and whether they authorise a locksmith. Those two questions are what you actually need answered.

What a locksmith will ask you for

Any locksmith who should be trusted with your door will ask you to show you belong there. Someone who asks nothing at all is the one to worry about — that is a person who will open any door for anyone, including the door of the unit you are sleeping in tomorrow.

What normally satisfies it is the booking confirmation showing the address and your name, plus your passport. Your passport is very often inside the apartment, which is fine: the booking confirmation on your phone plus a message from the host confirming you are the guest works just as well. If the building has a concierge who can vouch that you have been coming and going for four days, that helps too.

The other thing you will be asked is what kind of door it is. You do not need vocabulary for this. Look at whether there is a metal plate around the keyhole, and whether the door catches in more than one place when it closes. Those two answers are the difference between a standard cylinder and a high-security one, which is most of the difference in the price.

  • Booking confirmation showing the address and your name
  • Passport or ID, if it is not inside the apartment
  • A message from the host confirming you are the guest
  • The building or condo name and the unit number
  • Whether the door has a metal plate around the keyhole

What it should cost

A residential lockout in Cancun runs $450 to $900 pesos, about $26 to $51 US dollars, for a standard cylinder in daylight. A high-security or multi-point door is $700 to $900. Between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., and on Sundays and public holidays, there is a surcharge of $200 to $400 pesos.

That means a realistic worst case for a normal apartment door at three in the morning is around $1,300 pesos, roughly $74. If someone quotes you two hundred dollars for a standard apartment lockout, you are being quoted a tourist price, and you should say so and call somebody else.

Get the total on the phone before anyone leaves, with the night surcharge already inside it. The oldest trick in this trade is the low quote that acquires a night rate, a call-out fee and a 'difficulty' charge once the technician is standing in front of a person who has no alternatives at 3 a.m.

JobPrice (MXN)Approx. (USD)
Apartment door, standard cylinder$450 – $650$26 – $37
High-security or multi-point door$700 – $900$40 – $51
Key snapped inside the cylinder$600 – $1,100$34 – $63
Night, Sunday or holiday surcharge+$200 – $400+$12 – $23

Who pays: you or the host?

There is no universal rule, and both Airbnb and the major rental platforms leave it between guest and host. In practice it comes down to why the door was locked.

If you left the key inside, it is usually yours to pay. If the lock failed, the code you were given was wrong, or the lockbox was empty, it is the host's problem and most reasonable hosts treat it that way. The grey area — a door that closes and locks itself automatically without warning — is worth raising politely, because a self-locking door with no notice in the listing is arguably the host's design decision rather than your mistake.

Whatever the answer, get a receipt. Ask for it before the work starts, not after. A locksmith who will not issue one is telling you something.

And message the host before you authorise the work rather than after. Even if they do not reply in time, the message is the record.

How to make sure it does not happen twice

Once you are back inside, spend two minutes on the thing that prevents the repeat, because guests who get locked out once quite often do it again in the same stay.

Find out whether the door locks itself when it closes. Many Cancun rentals have a latch that engages automatically, which is exactly how the two-minute trip to the rubbish bins ends badly. If it does, put something in your pocket every single time you leave — key first, then everything else.

Photograph the lockbox code, the building door code and the WiFi password and keep them somewhere that is not the apartment. Email them to yourself. If your phone is what gets locked inside, a screenshot on the phone is worth nothing.

And save a locksmith's number in your phone before you need it, along with the host's number and the building's. Searching for one while standing outside at midnight is how people end up paying tourist prices to the first result on the map.

Frequently asked questions · locked out of your airbnb in cancun

Can a locksmith open the door if my passport is inside?

Yes. The booking confirmation on your phone showing the address and your name, ideally with a message from the host confirming you are the guest, is normally enough. It is a very common situation.

Will the door be damaged?

On a standard cylinder, no — the mechanism is worked from outside and the lock keeps functioning. That matters in a rental, because an undamaged door means there is nothing to argue about with the host.

Should I call Airbnb support first?

You can, but do not wait on it. Platform support cannot open a door and typically routes you back to the host. Message the host, then solve the problem.

How long will a locksmith take to reach me?

Twenty to thirty minutes for most of Cancun, thirty to forty-five in the Hotel Zone depending on the kilometre marker, and longer for Playa Mujeres or Puerto Morelos.

Is it cheaper to wait until morning?

By the night surcharge, $200 to $400 pesos. If you have somewhere safe to be and nothing is at risk inside, it is a legitimate choice. If there is a pet, medication or anything on the stove, it is not.
